Swim Team Update

Good Evening,

Cherokee coaching staff here, with a few bits of information we would like to pass on and remind you of. First though, I want to thank you all for an amazing first two weeks of the season. Our swimmers have already showed immense improvements and I believe that our coaching staff has done a phenomenal job providing the kids the opportunities to improve, with the kids taking those opportunities seriously and putting their best effort forward. I couldn't be more pleased with the progress that we have made.

Practice Time Changes
Our practice times will change slightly starting this upcoming week. With a large feeder group (more info on that in the next paragraph), we would like to ensure that all of our coaches are able to assist in some facet. That being said, we will be moving our feeder program to 9:45-10:15, and offering two practice times in the morning for swim team.

Monday-Thursday
Feeder- 9:45-10:15am
10 and under- 9-10am
11 and over- 10:15-11:30am

Friday
Feeder- 9:45-10:15
Swim Team- 10-11:30

We believe the extra 15 minutes of practice for the 8 and under will be incredibly beneficial to their stroke technique, as well as their endurance. Also, adding the 9-10's to our 8 and under practice will give our advanced 8 and under swimmers the opportunity to work with older swimmers. This will allow for more skill appropriate drills and coaching. I believe that this will maximize our coaches talents and feedback delivery, and in turn, provide our swimmers with an even better experience this season.

Feeder Program

Our first week of Feeder Group went great! We have over 25 of our youngest swimmers on roster. We were so glad to see those sweet faces again this summer and to meet our new youngest swimmers.

We will be focusing on more water safety this year in the Feeder Group and will start our stroke instruction out a little more slowly to make sure that all our Feeder Swimmers, whether they are beginner swimmers or more advanced swimmers, are getting the basics to build on. We are looking forward to all our swimmers learning and perfecting new skills and advancing to the main swim team when they are ready.

We are excited about moving to the new time change from 9:45-10:15. The program continues to grow and we want to meet all our swimmers' needs to the best of our abilities. The new time change will allow all 3 coaches as well as our dedicated teenage volunteers to work with the Feeder Program.

In keeping with the Cherokee Swim Team spirit, on Fridays the Feeder Group will participate in the Cherokee doughnut and games tradition. So if your swimmer can spend a few extra minutes on Friday, we will look forward to our traditional Feeder Fun Friday!

Home Meet, Thursday, June 11th
REMINDER: Next Thursday is our first official meet at home versus Beaver Brook. The meet will begin at 6pm, but we would like our families to arrive by 4:30pm. Remember to bring cap, goggles and a racing suit!

If you would like to volunteer at the meet and haven't already been contacted, please email us!

Look for an email later this weekend for more details.

Lock-In

CCC will have their annual overnight lock-in following our first home meet with Beaver Brook CC for all swimmers 11 and up on June 11th. This event will require all participants and parents to complete a waiver, as well as handing over car keys for all swimmers 16 and up. The night of the lock-in, all three of our coaches, and two lifeguards will be present all through the night, in addition to Martha and Rob Allen, and Janet and Ashley Shomaker being in attendance until 2am. When 2am hits, and kids begin to wrap up their evening, an adult will always be present.

The schedule for that night will look something like this:

Masters Update

We had a great turnout this week at our masters program!  There is a wide range of participants from those who have never had swim technique work before to college level swimmers.  We are always looking for more enthusiastic participants... Coach Brittany is the contact person for this group.  For more information and pricing info she can be reached via phone 850-585-3755 or at oxley.britt@gmail.com. For those of you who have thought about getting into swimming but never taken that next step, now is the time!

Third, we need parents who are certified officials. We need a meet referee, starter, and stroke and turn judge. As of now, these parents are certified:

Eleanor Broady - Stroke and Turn
Patricia Martin - Stroke and Turn
Kim Wood McClamroch - Stroke and Turn

3.) LOCK-IN FOR 11 AND UPS THURSDAY, JUNE 11TH

CCC will have their annual overnight lock-in following our first home meet with Beaver Brook CC for all swimmers 11 and up on June 11th. This event will require all participants and parents to complete a waiver, as well as handing over car keys for all swimmers 16 and up. More information will be provided in the coming weeks! I want to thank Martha Allen for volunteering to help us organize this event. That being said, the more help the better! Feel free to let us know if you are willing to assist in chaperoning this event, or setting up!

4.) FEEDER PROGRAM

This Wednesday, June 2, the feeder program begins. These are group lessons for new and non-swimmers taught by the coaching staff and older CCC swimmer volunteers. We are extremely excited about this program! These lessons will run from 9:00 - 9:30 on MWF. Please reach out to us with any questions/comments.

5.) PRIVATE LESSONS

We cannot stress enough the importance of technique as the primary way for swimmers to see performance improvements, and believe that all swimmers will greatly benefit from one on one work.  Private lessons are a great way to enhance your swimmer's technique. Myself, Brittany, and Elli have experience teaching private lessons, and have greatly impacted the stroke efficiency of many young swimmers. Proper technique is critical not only for enhancing a swimmers ability to move quickly and effectively through the water, but also aids in decreasing the risk of injury! Contact any of our coaches directly to reserve a lesson slot, and remember availability is limited so the sooner you sign up, the greater the likelihood that you will get your first choice time slot.  For your convenience, we will have registration sheets for each lesson completed, and CCC will bill each member's account directly.

6.) PARENT/COACH COMMUNICATION

My primary form of communication will be weekly emails sent on Sunday evenings.  The other forms of communication are outlined below. All important dates, practice times and the meet schedule are available on Google Calendar. Questions/comments feel free to let us know!

A.) Weekly Sunday evening emails (also available on the blogspot)

B.) Cherokee Blogspot (also available through CCC mobile app)

C.) CCC mobile app (download the app with password ccc1907 --> go to "Pool" --> go to "Swim Team News" which is linked to blogspot --> "Manage alerts" --> subscribe/turn on "Pool_news" channel)

D.) Push notifications (managed through CCC app)

E.) Google calendar

Looking forward to another great week of practice.

Take care,

Intrasquad Meet- June 2nd

Good evening,

Coach Sam here. The first two days of practice have been highly successful. I think the swimmers who have participated have learned a lot, as have our coaches. I wanted to touch of a few things quick before we get to the intrasquad meet.

First, practice start times are posted and showing up on time is expected. I understand that this is our first week, and moving forward there may be some conflicts, but I want everyone to show up on time as much as possible. Showing up on time is important for our practices to run smoothly and efficiently. I have held off the start of practice the past two days and will do so the rest of this week, but starting on Monday, practices will begin when planned.

Second, please get your paperwork in. We need concussion forms completed before your child practices. We have not had copies of the GKAISA Registration forms at our practices but should from here on out. Please work on completing those as well.

Third, Please join us this Thursday, May 28th at 7PM for information and to sign up for our Master's swimming program!!! The program will begin Monday, June 1st, at 7pm! If you are an adult who is interested in being a part of organized practices with other adults and gain the health benefits of high intensity cardio/low joint impact, an experienced in triathlete, former swimmer, newcomer to the sport, or want to test out swimming to see if you can beat your child, this program is for you. We will offer a mix of both technique and cardio work. Practices will be held MW 7-8pm and T/TH 7:30-8:30am.

AND NOW, the intrasquad meet information.

Next Tuesday night, June 2nd, is the annual Green and White intrasquad meet. The meet will begin at 6pm, with warm-ups starting at 5pm.

We really need help with this part of our home meets. PLEASE, if you are willing to help with officiating please please please let me know.

Based upon the responses I receive between now and Sunday afternoon I will write up an email to the families attending the meet with information on volunteering, meet line-up and the officials that we will need.
